Beware of the slippery slope...

Beware of that innocently appearing slippery slope to a life you never envisioned for yourself.

"I regret the time and effort I spent in my life to stay healthy, and the consequences I faced that came from staying healthy" - said no one ever.

Having worked in healthcare for almost a decade now, on a nearly daily basis I see how small, negative health changes often snowball into preventing people from living life to their full potential.

At the beginning the downward slope seems innocent and innocuous enough. Why should you be concerned with gaining 10 pounds after a breakup, after losing a job, or after having a baby? Yet time and time again this downward slope compounds on itself, and now the damage becomes a 30-50 pound weight gain, lower self esteem, and difficulty doing the activities you used to live for.

If you let those extra pounds and low moral continue, we now start seeing chronic conditions such as pre-diabetes and hypertension appear. By the time you are 50, those extra 30-50 pounds have contributed to you getting such conditions as diabetes mellitus type II, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Adding to this, by now all those years walking around with the extra weight, has now caused chronic knee pain (that often will not completely resolve, regardless of weight loss). You become depressed because you can't do the activities you want to do because of the chronic knee pain. If that weren’t bad enough, your weight gain, decreased exercise and chronic conditions, have now caused you to be at a higher risk for major health concerns such as a heart attack or stroke.

If you smoke, regularly over consume alcohol or regularly use recreational drugs, you are multiplying your chances of having a significant adverse health event.

You start to wonder what happened to yourself, your health, and your life. How did you allow yourself to become the you you have become?

Who would have thought that the innocent 10 pound weight gain would spiral them into all of this.

The crazy thing is, scenarios like this are the NORM and NOT THE EXCEPTION. Ask anyone who works in the healthcare field and they will confirm this with you.

I am not writing you all of this to scare you or make you more depressed. More so, I am writing to wake you up to the realities at hand. Even though most people don't realize they are playing with fire when it comes to their health and life, none the less, they are playing with fire. Consequences are real and often permanent. The good thing is that you don’t have to continue to head in this downward spiral.

Working in healthcare, one of my goals is to see people excel and succeed in life. To not let anything impede them from living their best life. I want you to feel empowered and in control, because in all actuality, you are in control of your life.
